Myth #2: Women can fight as well as men

I am the last person that would try and tell you that women are inferior to men. My wife would kick my ass. But I’ll tell you this – in hand to hand combat, men are generally going to have the upper hand. Is that sexist? It’s a fact. If it hurts your little feelings, cry about it and see if that helps.

The hard truth of it goes a little like this. Men tend to have thicker bones, blood and skin. It’s why men don’t get cold as easily. We heal a bit faster. We also tend to have larger, stronger muscles and are generally more aggressive. Note how I use words like “tend to”, and “generally”? That’s because, of course, nothing is ever always true. Wow. Try saying that five times fast. Some men are weaker than others. Some women are stronger. I’m only stating a statistical tendency. For instance, if you look up olympic event results, men jump higher and farther, run faster and longer, etc. than the female conterparts in the same events.

Can women fight? Of course they can. I’ve seen many very talented female martial artists who could put their skills to practical use with scary results. Can the average woman consistently beat the average man in a straight fight? No. On average, men will win the lion’s share of those encounters. It isn’t fair, but this site doesn’t claim that anything is ever fair.

Women are not like men. Men are not like women. We are simply born with a different set of attributes. Men tend to be able to make hi-speed driving manuevers better than women because of an inherently better ability to quickly determine spacial differences. Why do men pay so much more than women for car insurance? Because women are inherently wiser and more cautious than men. Women tend to get in more accidents, but they are small, fender-bender type accidents. Men wreck the car. Why? It’s called testosterone. The same hormone that makes men generally stronger than women takes a bite out of our common sense. Women live longer than men. This is not biological, like most of the other differences are, but is more social in nature. When stressed, women are more prone to seek out their support circle. When sick or injured, a woman is much more likely to seek medical attention quickly. A man “sucks it up” and doesn’t talk about his problems as much, and avoids the doctor until a lung falls out. This is stupid, but it is “man”, and is why our life expectancy is about seven years less than a woman’s.

We all have things that we tend to be better at than others. The point of this busted myth is to encourage people, men and women, to work towards their strengths, and to be aware of possible speed bumps on the trip.

If a woman wants to be a Fearless Fighter, there’s nothing stopping her. Just because a man tends to be larger and stronger, and thus has a statistical probability to come out ahead in a physical confrontation, this doesn’t mean that he will. It means that a woman, like a man who is smaller and/or weaker than his opponent, must be aware of that limitation and work around it.
